Records broken in these areas as Excessive Heat Warnings take effect

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It was a hot week, but Friday brought some of the hottest temperatures ever felt for some areas, and single-day record-breaking heat for others.

Palm Springs broke its all-time heat record Friday afternoon, reaching 124 degrees at 1:50 p.m. at Palm Springs International Airport and beating the previous record from June 17, 2021 of 123 degrees.

How to stay safe during a heat wave

Here are some other heat records for July 5:

  • Borrego Springs: 119 degrees (old record: 118 degrees from 1989)

  • Campo: 109 degrees (old record: 108 degrees from 2007)

  • Palomar Mountain: heat record tied at 97 degrees (last in 2007)

  • San Jacinto: 114 degrees (old record: 106 degrees in 2008)

  • Idyllwild: 104 degrees (old record: 99 degrees in 2007)

It goes to show this heat wave is a powerful one and won’t let up much over the next week.

Daytime highs will be flirting with triple digits for some local valley and mountain communities the next two days.

5 things to do in San Diego this weekend

The Excessive Heat Warning now includes San Diego County’s valleys and mountains for Friday and Saturday afternoon. Major to extreme heat remains for the county’s desert communities through the weekend and into much of next week.

Saturday daytime highs for the coast will peak in the upper 70s to low 80s, mid 90s for inland valleys, upper 90s in the mountains and just shy of 120 degrees in the deserts.

At the coast, marine layer clouds will return each evening and morning and will moderate temperatures along beaches this weekend.

Heat backs off a hair for Sunday afternoon, but above-average temperatures are expected to stick around for the second week of July, with possibly some relief the end of next week.
