Report: Louisiana has one of the worst school systems

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana ranks as one of the states with the worst school systems, according to a study.

WalletHub conducted a study that tracks which U.S. states have the best and worst school systems. Louisiana finished 47th on WalletHub’s public school system ranking list. Louisiana had a score of 38.17.

The rankings were based on the state’s dropout rate, math and reading test scores, SAT and ACT scores, pupil-teacher ratio, percentage of injured/threatened high school students and bullying incident rates.

Massachusetts is the state ranked with the best school system with an overall score of 74.36, according to the data.

Louisiana has a quality ranking of 46 and a safety ranking of 48.

The state ranks 44th in math test scores, 41st in reading test scores, 42nd in student-teacher ratio, 43rd in median ACT scores, 47th for the percentage of licensed educators, 38th for dropout rate, 38th for bullying incident rate and 45th for the percentage of injured/threatened high school students, according to the data.

Here are the top five worst school systems in the United States.

  • New Mexico — 27.92 overall score

  • Oklahoma — 32.80 overall score

  • Arizona — 33.32 overall score

  • Alaska — 36.77 overall score

  • Louisiana — 38.17 overall score
