Could fireball be source of shaking and loud boom experienced in NJ?

Residents in parts of New Jersey and New York took to social media on Tuesday afternoon to report hearing a loud explosion, boom or shaking.

The exact cause is not confirmed but NASA Meteor Watch may have offered a clue.

Earthquake in NJ?

Some speculated that it might have been an earthquake, but the U.S. Geological Survey stated that they have no record of any seismic activity in the area so far. The National Weather Service also had no information about the cause.

Social media posts described the noise as a "boom" sound. One New Jersey resident posted on Facebook describing it as something 'huge fell on my house."

Fireball over New York City

NASA Meteor Watch wrote that a "daylight fireball" passed over New York City at 11:17 a.m.

"Local media are reporting the sighting of a fireball and booms and shakings between 10 AM and noon Eastern Daylight Time today," NASA Meteor Watch wrote. "There have also been a few reports filed on the American Meteor Society website, and that information has permitted a very crude determination of the trajectory of the meteor."

This does not necessarily correlate with the shaking reported at that time, though.

Facebook groups in Glen Rock, Clifton and North Haledon, among others, saw posts about people sharing their experience. On the New Jersey subreddit someone in Monmouth County asked about the shaking.

Several people on X, formerly Twitter, posted about the shaking.

NJ loud boom

Local authorities have yet to confirm the source of the noise.

The stir on Tuesday comes months after the infamous April earthquake, perhaps leaving some people more likely to notice any even somewhat similar activity.
