The city of Republic will receive financial help from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to upgrade its wastewater treatment system.

The fast-growing city southwest of Springfield has planned a $102.7 million project to improve the city's wastewater treatment plant to replace aging equipment and increase treatment capacity.

The project is slated to be complete by December 2026.

The Missouri DNR is providing financial assistance in the form of a $50 million low-interest loan through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, which is expected to save the city's rate-payers approximately $27.1 million in interest over the 27-year loan term, according to a Wednesday news release.

"We believe in helping Missouri communities thrive, and this includes making sure they can upgrade important infrastructure like water treatment systems,” Gov. Mike Parson said in the release. “One of the ways we do that is by offering financial assistance through programs like the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.”

The other $52.7 million to fund the project is coming from other sources.

“Infrastructure such as wastewater systems are crucial to every community,” said Dru Buntin, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, in the release.

“Through this fund, we can help qualified cities like Republic identify and make the changes needed to improve their wastewater systems, which ultimately will improve the quality of life for Missourians.”

The Clean Water State Revolving Fund helps finance improvements to wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection systems' rehabilitations and extensions and combined sewer overflow corrections. It also finances upgrades to security, efficiency and conservation measures.
