Researchers update Atlantic hurricane season forecast for 2024: What you need to know
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Colorado State University has released its updated forecast for the 2024 hurricane season in the Atlantic basin.
In their latest projections, researchers maintained their “forecast for an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season” this year.
“Our confidence this year is higher than normal for an August forecast based on the strength and persistence of the current hurricane-favorable large-scale environmental conditions,” according to the forecast.
The number of projected named storms expected in the latest update is 23. Researchers said of the 23, 12 are predicted to reach hurricane strength. Six of the 12 are forecasted to reach major hurricane strength, meaning they reach Category 3, 4 or 5.
According to experts, very warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic are the primary reason for an above-average hurricane season forecast.
The probability of major hurricanes making landfall on the Gulf Coast for the rest of the season is at 38% in the report.
Initial projections came out in April 2024. At the time, researchers said it could be an “extremely active” 2024 hurricane season. Since that first update, there have been changes to the projections including the numbers of hurricanes, major hurricanes, named storm days and major hurricane days.
