Retired Chicago police officer, 73, shot and killed on West Side

CHICAGO — A retired Chicago Police officer was shot and killed Thursday morning on Chicago’s West Side.

According to police, the 73-year-old man, who police say is a retired CPD officer, was in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street in the city’s Garfield Park neighborhood around 11:30 a.m. when was shot. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Ald. Jason Ervin identified his constituent of the 28th Ward as Larry Neuman.

Neuman was also a well respected as a minister at St Michael Missionary Baptist Church.

“Larry was all around,” Ervin said. “He was at the church working and did his work as a police officer. One of the first African American bomb techs in the department’s history. Just a great guy.”

His death has been ruled a homicide.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been released.

A spokesman for the Chicago Police Department said he joined the force in 1982 and retired in 2010. He worked as a bomb tech for the department for many years.

He was most recently working with the TSA. A statement from the TSA said he was a Transportation Security Specialist-Explosives and worked at both O’Hare and Midway airports. He trained the screening workforce at both airports to detect explosives and other potential threats.

“We are deeply saddened by his passing and extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” the statement said.

No one is in custody.
