MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man fired a shot at a woman and stole her Dodge Challenger on Rhodes College’s campus Wednesday, according to Memphis Police.

3 juveniles, 1 adult shot on I-240; 2 detained after chase

At around 2 a.m., officers responded to a carjacking at Rhodes College’s security office.

The victim said she was inside the office when she saw a light on in her 2023 Dodge Challenger. When she went outside to look, she saw someone sitting in her car and tried to initiate the killswitch.

When the suspect saw the victim, he got out of the car and fired a shot at her. He then followed her into the security office, police say.

According to reports, the suspect pointed the gun at the victim and stated, “Give me the keys [expletive].” The victim complied, and the suspect drove away in her car.

The victim told MPD that her Dell work laptop, work phone, phone, subwoofer speakers valued at $800, and wallet were all inside her car when it was taken.

MPD made the scene and saw that the gunshot had struck the building.

WREG reached out to Rhodes. They provided the following statement:
“We can confirm that a campus safety dispatcher’s car, a dark blue Dodge Challenger, was stolen overnight on Tutwiler just west of University. We sent a notification to our campus community shortly after the incident. The suspect fired one shot and demanded keys. We are thankful that no one was injured. Rhodes is working with the Memphis Police Department to increase its patrols in the area and will be continuing its on-campus and campus perimeter safety patrols.”

Many people living in near Tutwiler Avenue and University Street by Rhodes College told WREG they have a steady morning routine. They wake up, walk their dogs, and then check their cars to see if they have been broken into or stolen– as this is common in the area.

“Someone had just gone up and down the block and just broken every car window,” said Madeleine Edwards who lives nearby.

Edwards said she’s always felt some comfort with Rhodes College Security patrolling the area, but that may change now. “Now it sounds like they’re victims as well.”

No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
