RMV restarting motor vehicle inspections today after tech outage disrupted services

Motor vehicle inspections will restart in Massachusetts today, Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced.

Last Friday, a worldwide technology outage forced Commonwealth officials to cancel all inspections. Inspections are set to resume today, Wednesday, according to a Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles statement.

"The Registry continues to coordinate with its vendor, OPUS, and inspection sites with remaining issues," the statement said. "Meanwhile, the RMV is giving vehicle owners who need re-tests on failed inspections more time to get them."

The RMV suggested checking mavehiclecheck.com to find a station near you for motor vehicle inspections.

"The Registry will extend anyone whose reinspection date expired between 7/19/2024 through 7/31/2024 until 8/10/2024 for their free re-inspection," the statement said.

The global tech outage also affected Service Center and AAA appointments, online credit card payments and phone calls at the RMV Contact Center.
