Roanoke Commissioners of Revenue hosting canned food drive through August

ROANOKE, Va.(WFXR)– Roanoke City’s Commissioner of Revenue, Ryan LaFountain, announced the 6th annual ‘Commissioners and Cans’ food drive, an effort to help increase food access for local families.

Last year, the food drive was able to contribute 360 pounds of food to Feeding Southwest Virginia. This year, LaFountain hopes to increase that amount to over 500 pounds.

“Food insecurity leads to many negative outcomes for families and we believe that it is important that we help those who are in need. Reducing food insecurity makes our families, our communities, and our city stronger,” LaFountain said, adding, “and we are proud to be part of an effort to help our wonderful, 8-time All-America Award-winning city.”

The City of Roanoke says the most needed items this year are canned meats, canned vegetables, low-sugar canned fruits, peanut butter & jelly, macaroni & cheese, hearty soups, pasta and sauces, cereal and oatmeal, and condiments and spices.

The food drive has already started and will run until Saturday, Aug. 31. People can make their donations at the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office located in rooms 213 and 251 of the Noel C Taylor Municipal Building in downtown Roanoke.
