Robbery, pursuit in Southern California ends with foot chase inside Walmart

Five men wanted in connection with an alleged robbery in Bakersfield were arrested after a high-speed pursuit and a foot chase that ended inside a Walmart in San Bernardino County, authorities announced.

The incident unfolded just before noon Wednesday when police in Bakersfield requested the assistance of deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in apprehending the suspects as they were driving southbound on Highway 395 toward Adelanto in a black Mercedes-Benz.

SBSD deputies and officers with the California Highway Patrol, along with a CHP helicopter, spotted the suspect vehicle traveling at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour while passing other cars on the shoulder of the highway.

“Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to yield and continued to drive with complete disregard for public safety,” an SBSD news release stated.

When the driver pulled into a Walmart parking lot in Victorville, four suspects jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the store, while the driver of the Mercedes sped off.

Authorities said that Walmart employees quickly worked to evacuate their customers to a safe location as deputies, including a K-9 unit, searched the store for the four suspects and ultimately took them into custody.

The driver of the Mercedes was also arrested after a short pursuit, officials added.
