Ron Johnson's moment in the spotlight at the Republican National Convention did not go completely to plan.

The opening lines of the remarks he intended to deliver calling for unity did not appear on the teleprompter, an aide to Johnson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

And he mistakenly read a line — not intended to be in the final version of his speech — that said Democratic policies were "a clear and present danger to America, to our institutions, our values and our people."

Johnson’s nearly 4-minute speech opening a nominating convention in Milwaukee that Republicans have attempted to center around “unity” notably made no mention of the word. Rather, it was filled with attacks on Democrats.

The Democratic Party, Johnson said as he welcomed Republican delegates to Wisconsin, are the party of “open borders, reckless spending, weaponized government and weakness on the world stage.”

He called Democrats’ agenda “fringe” and attacked them for discussing gender-related issues. “Vice President Harris and President Biden,” Johnson said, “have made our lives less safe and more expensive.”

“We repaired the damage done by Democrats before, and we will do it again,” Johnson said, noting Republicans want smaller government, less regulation and to secure the border.

He presented Trump as the solution, ending his speech with Trump's slogan of “Make America Great Again.”

But who is to blame for the speech mishap?

"Not us," the aide said.
