Rose Bud, mayor being sued by ACLU of Arkansas over petition signatures at town-sponsored event

ROSE BUD, Ark. – The town of Rose Bud and its mayor Shawn Gorham are being sued by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas on behalf of the ballot question committee For AR Kids.

The ACLU said the committee planned to collect petition signatures at Summerfest from June 20-22.

Rose Bud passed an ordinance on June 17 that the ACLU claims limits the abilities of ballot question committees at town-sponsored events, including the planned Summerfest running Thursday through Saturday.

Under the new ordinance, any groups looking to get people attending events like Summerfest to sign petitions must rent a booth on the event grounds that can be placed wherever the event organizers decide it to be.

The ACLU also said the rule puts restrictions on looking for signatures on the public space outside of the actual festival.

The lawsuit argues the restrictions unfairly targets those who seek to advocate for political change through the petition process.
