Royal Fire in Tahoe National Forest grows to 54 acres, officials say

(FOX40.COM) — According to officials with the Tahoe National Forest, a fire in the area has grown to 54 acres and is spreading rapidly.

The fire has been named the Royal Fire and according to Cal Fire, was reportedly caused by an escaped camp fire found by hikers.

Evacuation warnings are in place for about five homes along Soda Springs Rd in the Cedars community, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8 p.m. the sheriff’s office announced that Soda Springs Road would be closed for a mile-and-a-quarter stretch of road south of the intersection with Serene Road to the intersection of Soda Springs Road and Forest Service Road.

Air resources are at the scene and ground resources were on the way but were dealing with difficult terrain, per the Tahoe National Forest’s last update.

According to Cal Fire’s incident page, the cause of the fire is under investigation and started around 4 p.m.

Tahoe National Forest initially reported the acreage at 100 acres, but later corrected the number to 54 acres “based on more accurate mapping.”
