Salina asking for donations for Safe Haven Baby Box

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The City of Salina is working toward getting a Safe Haven Baby Box.

The baby box gives parents a secure way to surrender their newborns. It will cost $21,000, as well as $500 for annual maintenance. Salina is collecting donations to cover the installation.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Inc. was started in 2015 by Monica Kelsey. It provides devices safe for newborn surrender installed at fire stations or hospitals with alarms for immediate emergency response.

Salina Fire said in a Facebook post the initiative was spearheaded by Salina Mayor Bill Longbine and supported by the Salina City Commission, City Manager Mike Schrage, and the Salina Fire Department. The Salina Fire Department was then tasked with completing the project.

The Salina Fire Department will install a Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station 1, which is fully compliant with the Kansas Safe Haven Law.
