Santa Cruz serial killer Ed Kemper denied parole

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) — Serial killer Edmund “Ed” Emil Kemper was denied parole at a hearing held by state prison officials this week. His next chance for parole is slated for 2031.

When he was just 15 years old, Kemper murdered his grandparents. He was confined to a state psychiatric hospital as a teenager.

Kemper was later released from the hospital and lived with his mother at her home in Aptos, Calif. He began a murder spree in 1972 that terrorized Santa Cruz County.

Kemper murdered seven women before killing his final victim — his mother.

“The murders involved dismemberment and sexual depravity,” the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office wrote. Most of the victims were young hitchhiking college students who Kemper picked up in his car.

Five decades later, the 75-year-old inmate still lacks remorse for his killings, according to District Attorney Jeff Rosell. Kemper would pose a danger to society if he was released from prison, Rosell said during the serial killer’s state parole hearing on Tuesday.

The district attorney said, “Ed Kemper is one of the most depraved and prolific serial killers of our time. He lacks insight and shows no true remorse for these brutal murders.”

Kemper remains locked in California Medical Facility in Vacaville, prison inmate records show.
