Santa Rosa County Superintendent Dr. Karen Barber heard the exciting news that Florida Department of Education gave her county an “A” grade.

“We are thrilled, I’ve spent the morning calling principals and administrators and schools just letting them know how proud I am of the achievement of their students and how grateful we are,” said Barber.

Santa Rosa County has 14 schools with a grade of “A,” ranking eighth overall in Florida.

The components reviewed for grading are English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, graduation rate, and acceleration success.

Students take an evaluation at the end of the school year to measure achievement levels in each component. Those scores are then added together and divided to get the final percentage of acceleration based upon review by the Florida Department of Education.

For schools to qualify for that “A,” schools must reach 64% in achievement levels. Santa Rosa County hit 66%.

Certain schools are dedicated to bettering their students who may come from economically disadvantaged homes.

“I’m really so proud of our schools because some of our schools that have a higher percentage of children that live in poverty and yet three of those schools this year went from a ‘C’ grade to a ‘B’ grade,” said Barber.
