Search underway for two missing men on Lake Michigan

Jul. 6—HAMMOND — Indiana Conservation Officers are searching for two men in the waters of Lake Michigan after they went missing Friday.

A third man was found and released after receiving medical treatment, according to an Indiana Department of Natural Resources news release.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., conservation officers began their search, responding to a report that two people were missing after jumping from their boat near Hammond. Officers located the boat nearly two and a half miles off the shore of Whiting and were advised that an additional man was missing but wearing a life jacket.

A multi-agency search was initiated for the area and at approximately 5:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard located the missing man wearing a life jacket. He was transported to an area hospital and later released.

The search for the other two missing men is still underway, the release added. Their identities are being withheld at this time pending family notification.

Weather conditions in the area are hampering search efforts due to strong winds and high waves.

Assisting agencies include the U.S. Coast Guard Marine and Aviation Units, Lake County Sheriff's Department Marine and Aviation Units, the Hammond Fire Department, the Hammond Police Department, and the Hammond Port Authority.
