Second body found in fire that gutted South El Monte building

A second body was discovered after firefighters doused a blaze that erupted in a commercial building in the San Gabriel Valley late Sunday night.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to KTLA that there is a second case number in connection with the fire that broke out just before 11:30 p.m. on Rush Street near Edwards Avenue in South El Monte.

The Department did not identify either of the victims.

Responding firefighters were forced into a defensive mode while battling the blaze after arriving to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the building, which also experienced a partial roof collapse.

Once the fire was extinguished, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson confirmed that a body was discovered inside the building.

It was unclear when the second body was located.

The cause of the fire also remains unknown.
