Scurry County judge issues disaster declaration after 5.1 earthquake, 60 other earthquakes

After being hit by a third major earthquake that was felt around West Texas this week, the Scurry County judge has issued a disaster declaration.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Scurry County was rocked again Friday morning by a reported 5.1-magnitude earthquake, increasing its magnitude from its original 4.8 rating.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck 17 kilometers (10.56 miles) northeast of Hermleigh, Texas, at a depth of 1.79 km, around 9:29 a.m., leading citizens to report tremors from all over West Texas. A second reported earthquake of 3.2 magnitude struck the same area at 9:40 a.m., followed by a third earthquake with a 2.7 magnitude around 10:40 a.m.

In total, over 60 earthquakes have hit Scurry County in the past seven days, according to Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks. In a social media post, Hicks stated that he is "requesting any assistance we can get from the State of Texas."

He also urges those impacted by the earthquakes to report any damage via the iSTAT tool through the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

The 5.1 earthquake was felt throughout Texas, according to the USGS, including Dallas, Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Midland, Big Spring, San Angelo, and Abilene.

No damage has been reported, with the USGS damage prediction being little damage to facilities.

West Texas is not unfamiliar with moderate earthquakes, although most produce little to no confirmed damage. The last two were 4.9 and 4.4 magnitude earthquakes on Monday night in Scurry County.
