OMAHA — Second gentleman Doug Emhoff is coming back to Omaha on Wednesday. His visit kicks off an expected parade of surrogates from the presidential campaigns seeking a stray swing vote in the Electoral College from Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.

Emhoff, a lawyer married to Vice President Kamala Harris, visited Omaha in March, as well, on behalf of President Joe Biden’s campaign.

This time, Emhoff is hosting a roundtable with small-business owners in Omaha to discuss their votes in the race. He’s also meeting with young voters. The times and locations were not disclosed. His previous visit highlighted reproductive rights with doctors in North Omaha.

Biden is running a rematch race against former President Donald Trump, who survived being shot Saturday during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Biden, like President Barack Obama in 2008, won the 2nd District in 2020. Trump collected Nebraska’s four other electoral votes in 2020, winning statewide and in Nebraska’s 1st and 3rd Districts. Nebraska and Maine award a single electoral vote to the winner in every congressional district and the rest to the statewide winner.

During his visit in March, Emhoff said Biden wants to win “the blue dot” a second time. He and local Democrats say presidential campaign organizing also could help State Sen. Tony Vargas in his race against Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb.

Both Biden and former President Donald Trump sent surrogates to the Omaha area in 2020.  Trump also visited himself.

Gov. Jim Pillen and other Nebraska Republicans want to see a return to winner-take-all for Electoral College votes. It’s possible the issue could come up in a special session this year.
