Settlement with Cameo to ensuring honesty of celebrity endorsements reached by Pennsylvania, 29 other states

(WHTM)– Pennsylvania and 29 other states reached a settlement Friday to make sure celebrity endorsements are honest.

Attorney General Michelle Henry joined 29 other state Attorneys General to reach a settlement with Baron, Inc., also known as Cameo, for failing to ensure consumers know that their videos are paid endorsements, according to the AG’s office .

Cameo allows users to pay any celebrity registered on the app to record a video of themselves saying whatever users want. These “cameos” are commonly purchased as birth gifts or congratulatory videos, the AG said.

Pennsylvania consumer protection laws and federal Trade Commission regulations, videos must disclose they are paid endorsements, which Cameo did not.

The investigation found that Cameo failed to implement measures to ensure videos created on their platform were disclosed as paid endorsements. Celebrities promoting and reviewing brands’ products were being posted online without disclosing they were paid to do so.

Cameo says it will use a watermark system in the future to highlight paid ads and monitor their use for compliance, the AG says.
