Rain, hail hit parts of Coachella Valley and mountains

Storms that came through the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountains Monday brought heavy rain and hail in places, leading meteorologists to issue flash flood warnings.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of the Coachella Valley that was set to remain in place until 5:15 p.m.

Earlier, the weather service warned of winds up to 60 mph and "quarter-sized" hail in areas, adding: "Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees."

Areas included in the warning:

  • Southeastern Palm Springs

  • Palm Desert

  • La Quinta and Santa Rosa Mountains

  • Highway 74 Between Anza and Palm Desert

  • Highway 74 between Mountain Center and Anza

  • Eastern Anza

Weather officials warned the storm carried torrential rainfall and said life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, highways, streets and underpasses was possible.

People were urged to stay indoors in an interior room on the lowest floor and to refrain from driving vehicles through flooded roadways.

Monday's storm followed another monsoonal popup on Sunday that deluged Palm Desert and parts of the high desert.
