Rep. Sharice Davids endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Monday, as Democrats began to quickly coalesce around her candidacy.

Davids, who represents Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District, had held off on backing Harris in the first hours after President Joe Biden on Sunday announced he was withdrawing from the race.

“The choice in this presidential election is clear. Kamala Harris will fight MAGA extremism, protect our reproductive rights, and defend our democracy. Most importantly, uniting behind her gives us the best chance to prevent another term for Donald Trump,” Davids said on social media.

Davids, whose district includes Johnson County, part of Wyandotte County and rural areas southwest of the Kansas City metro, is seeking her fourth term in Congress. She will face the winner of the Republican primary in August, either physician Prasanth Reddy or businesswoman Karen Crnkovich.

Davids’ endorsement came as key party figures lined up to support Harris, who is rapidly consolidating support among Democrats. As of Monday morning, no other major Democrat had announced they would also seek the nomination.

The population center of the 3rd District – Johnson County – has become increasingly Democratic over the past decade. Former President Donald Trump won the county in 2016 but Biden won it in 2020.
