Shark bites 14-year-old boy at NC beach

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A 14-year-old boy survived a shark bite along the Carolina coast on Monday.

Chief William Younginer with the North Topsail Beach Police Department reported the call came in at 12:32 p.m.

“We had a shark bite at Beach Access number 4, which is located at 484 New River Inlet Rd.  This is an Onslow County access.  North Topsail Beach Police Department had officers already on scene as well as Medical units from Onslow County EMS.  They were there for an earlier medical call which required no action or transport,” Younginer said.

The department said officers were notified about the bite and responded with EMS where bystanders were already applying towels and pressure to the wound.

Officers applied a tourniquet and EMS transported the boy to Camp Lejune Naval Hospital where he was treated and released.

Once EMS transported beach activities resumed normal. There are no reports related to seeing the shark.

This is the second reported shark bite in recent weeks.

On June 18, a man was sent to an area hospital after a reported “shark bite” at an island beach in Brunswick County, near the South Carolina border. Sunset Beach Police were later unable to confirm what bit the man and said it appeared the injury was caused by some “sort of sea life”.
