Shepherd University unveils new logo and branding

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Shepherd University unveiled a new brand and logo on Monday, June 3.

The branding brings the university together under a singular image across all administrative and academic units.

Executive Director of University Communications Hans Fogle is excited to see this updated branding unify and strengthen the campus community.

"We are excited to begin the process of rebranding with new brand standards and a refreshed logo," he said. "The brand came together after years of work by internal and external stakeholders, and represents our history as well as our future."

The logo, which was designed by Shepherd alum Tory Orr ‘20, features the iconic McMurran Hall clock tower.

Orr is currently working in Shepherd's Division of Communications and Marketing as a print design specialist and web manager.

Fogle expects Orr's logo design will become synonymous with Shepherd and serve as a visual representation of the close-knit community on campus.

"Our new logo reasserts the goals of our future-driven Ram Fam and reintroduces us to the community and prospective students," explained Fogle. "This new image for Shepherd University serves as a symbol of our dedication to always be looking toward the future."

The brand incorporates traditional elements like Shepherd's long-standing gold and blue colors and the iconic clock tower, but with the addition of refreshing brand elements that reflect the institution's dynamic mission and vision.

The new logo design also addresses operational challenges with the former logo, alleviating structural issues, increasing accessibility and allowing for the creation of standardized logo lockups for administrative and academic units.

This change in branding is being used now and will become increasingly present over time, a process Fogle says will save money.

"Tory [Orr] designed the new standards to complement many of the elements we’ve been using over the years so we can transition to the new standards over time."

Orr designed the logo and created brand elements in-house rather than seeking an outside vendor.

The in-depth brand standards are available on the Shepherd University website.
