Woman in custody after 9-year-old son dies in Topeka

Update 6:24 p.m.- The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has released new information about the incident near Sherwood Lake.

Deputies arrived to an incident on Southwest Worwick Town Road and found a 9-year-old located inside a house. The child was suffering from multiple wounds to the chest and neck. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 9-year-old’s mother, Shyla M. Goracke, 29, of Topeka has been custody in connection to the incident. She is currently being held at a local hospital. An autopsy of the child is scheduled for Friday, June 21.

The case is still under investigation by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

KSNT 27 News uncovered the woman who owns the house where the incident took place also owns Mutt’Staches Mobile Grooming. A company van was seen in the driveway of the home where the child was found dead.

A post was made Wednesday on the businesses Facebook post saying she was shutting her business down.

“It kills me to still have to go this route, but I would never do anything like this if I felt it wasn’t my only option I had. At the end of the day, I have to take care of my son and myself.”

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a deceased child near Sherwood Lake.

According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a call about an incident on Southwest Worwick Town Road. When law enforcement arrived to the scene, a deceased child was found.

Deputies are currently on scene actively investigating the incident. One adult subject is in custody.

A spokeswoman with the Sheriff’s Office told 27 News a release with more information is expected to be released Friday morning.
