Gunman opens fire on random commuters in Riverside County; 1 dead, 1 wounded

One person was killed, another hospitalized after a suspect in Riverside County was reportedly firing a gun at passing cars Monday and then allegedly disrobing.

Authorities with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department flooded the intersection of State and West 7th streets in San Jacinto on reports of gunfire just after 7 a.m.

In surveillance footage obtained by KTLA’s Shelby Nelson from a nearby business, a man is seen first walking down the street. A short time later, what sounds like gunfire is heard as cars pass by on State Street.

The driver of a black sedan then crashes, smashing the vehicle’s front end. There was also a white pickup truck located with several bullet holes, two of which had pierced its windshield.

It is currently unclear if either of the two gunshot victims were in those vehicles.

Witnesses in the area believe the man had been firing randomly at passing cars with some reports suggesting he was seen getting undressed after the gunfire.

The person believed to be the suspect later walked into El Toro Carniceria.

“At first I didn’t pay no mind, it’s just a regular customer and a regular day,” the store’s clerk, who did not want to be identified, told KTLA. “Then after I finished with the customer before him, he started walking back and forth and he told me, ‘What can I buy for a dollar?’”

The clerk said she gave him a few options and the man began to look around.

“Then he puts his hoodie on and I got nervous,” she explained. “I said, ‘Is he going to rob me or something because he was sweaty and he looked a little nervous.”

Eventually, the man left the store, was located by deputies and taken into custody.
