From shootings to Helene, here's a breakdown of our biggest stories from September
Shootings, music festivals and even a tropical storm. A lot of things happened in Kentucky last month, and you may have lost track of them.
Some events spanned days and even weeks, while others garnered attention for a moment, but still remain impactful. Among those is the shooting at a PRP High School parking lot during a football game on Sunday, Sept. 29; the Kentucky House Democratic Caucus voted to expel Rep. Daniel Grossberg; Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Marty Pollio announced his retirement; and The Courier Journal's investigation into Highlands Latin School.
Here are some of the most eventful moments of September:
I-75 shooting
It may be hard to believe, but the shooting that happened on Interstate 75, eight miles south of London Kentucky, was at the beginning of September.
Joseph Couch, who police identified as the suspect, shot at nine vehicles on Sept. 7 in the interstate and left five people injured. The shooting led to a nearly two week manhunt that ended when the body of the suspect was identified on Sept. 20.
Letcher County judge shot
Another shooting that shook Kentucky residents was the death of District Judge Kevin Mullins on Sept. 19.
Letcher County Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines allegedly walked into Mullins' chambers and shot him after an argument, KSP spokesperson Matt Gayheart said.
Stines, who has since resigned from his sheriff position ahead of his preliminary hearing on Tuesday afternoon, surrendered himself to police on the day of the incident and was arrested at 3 p.m., according to court documents.
Bourbon and Beyond and Louder Than Life
Heavy metal fans and bourbon enthusiasts got their food and music fix last month during the Bourbon and Beyond and Louder Than Life festivals.
On the weekend of the "World's Largest Music and Bourbon Festival," more than 200,000 people came to Louisville and enjoyed acts including Sting and Tyler Childers.
Louder Than Life celebrated its 10th year between Sept. 26-29 at the Highland Festival Grounds and featured performances from Korn and Jigsaw Youth. The festival had to be canceled on Friday because of the severe weather brought by Tropical Storm Helene.
Tropical Storm Helene
Parts of Kentucky were impacted on Sept. 27 by remnants of Tropical Storm Helene. Other parts of the country were also affected by Helene, with a toll of more than 100 deaths and nearly 1.6 customers without power as of Monday evening, USA TODAY previously reported.
As for Kentucky, several central and eastern counties declared states of emergencies in response to the effects of Helene in the state. Some of the effects of Helene were fallen trees, downed electrical lines and thousands of power outages.
