Sioux City conducts day 2 of point-in-time count

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Day two of this year’s point-in-time count took place at two local nonprofits that help out with the homeless population.

Volunteers came out to talk with those at The Gospel Mission and the Siouxland Soup Kitchen on Thursday. They asked those who are homeless where they stayed over the night.

The count happens once a year and is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It counts the number of homeless people who are sheltered and unsheltered.

Neighborhood Services members say they only came across five people that were staying outside over the night.

“It’s hard to see, there’s a lot of people out there that are staying outside,” Neighborhood Services project coordinator Armando Mora said. “Just because there’s five doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s five out there. There could be more that we just didn’t find. We’re just trying our best to comfort them and get them connected to our services.”

City officials say the count gives an idea of how many are homeless in the community. It can be a challenge getting information when conducting the count, depending on who they talk to.

“It’s the full gambit of emotions when we interview folks,” Neighborhood Services outreach coordinator Clara Macfarlane Coly said. “Some people are very willing and eager to talk and then talk about resources too. And some people really don’t want to answer, so we’ve had a lot of people turn away and say no, they don’t want to share anything or they only want to give their initials on some of the questions.”

Coly says the final numbers will take some time to tally up. Those will be send out to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
