SOUTH BRUNSWICK - A township man has been charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated in connection with a July 4 crash in Manhattan in which three people were killed and eight more people were injured.

According to Hernandez, around 8:53 p.m. Thursday, Hyden, who was driving a Ford F-450 pickup truck, struck 11 people, killing three in the area of Water and Jackson street on the Lower East Side between the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges.

Eight other people were hospitalized, Hernandez said.

Hyden is being held in the New York City Police Department's 7th Precinct and has yet to have a first court appearance.

News reports say the crash occurred after Hyden was allegedly speeding and drove through a stop sign, then over a sidewalk before striking people celebrating July 4, including four people who were trapped under the pickup truck.

Reports identified the victims killed as a 59-year-old woman, her 39-year-old son, and another woman. A young boy and a 30-year-old woman were among those injured.

Hyden was identified by the New York Post as a substance abuse counselor and author of the book "The Sober Addict."

An Amazon.com description of the book says Hyden is a substance abuse counselor, instructor, public speaker, and wellness advocate in New York City whose mission is to use his lifelong experience with addiction to teach addicts how to save themselves and achieve long-term recovery.
