South Carolina man dies from injuries in I-81 crash near Hagerstown in early July

A South Carolina man whose van was hit by an Acura SUV changing lanes on Interstate 81 near Halfway on July 6 has died from his injuries, according to a Maryland State Police spokesperson.

Scott Cutting, 66, of Lexington, S.C., succumbed to his injuries in late July, according to state police spokesperson Ngan Ho.

State police continue to investigate the crash, which occurred on southbound I-81 near Interstate 70 on that Saturday afternoon, Ho wrote in an emailed response to The Herald-Mail's inquiry about the crash. The crash was reported around 3:40 p.m.

Cutting was driving a 2016 Ford Transit south on I-81.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2009 Acura MDX was heading south on I-81 when it changed lanes into the Ford, according to state police. The van traveled left and hit a concrete barrier wall and a support pier.

State police aviation flew Cutting to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

A passenger in the van was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown and has since been released, Ho wrote.

The Acura driver stayed at the scene after the crash.
