St. Johnsbury area braces for more rain after deluge on Tuesday caused road closures

St. Johnsbury is facing another forecast for heavy rains Wednesday afternoon, a day after more than 8 inches of rain fell on the Northeast Kingdom, causing flash floods and heavy damage Tuesday.

"Rounds of showers and storms will develop today," the National Weather Service Burlington wrote in a post on Facebook Wednesday. "The main concern will be if thunderstorms track across the same area multiple times, especially in sections of eastern Vermont that will be more vulnerable to additional flooding from additional rain."

The weather service has issued a flood watch for the St. Johnsbury area, saying "These conditions are expected by 12:00 noon."

St. Johnsbury flooded by 'historic' storm

Localized heavy rains washed out roads and caused other damage in the St. Johnsbury area on Tuesday, less than three weeks after the remnants of Hurricane Beryl left the area inundated.

"About two dozen rescues took place during the latest round of flooding and officials warned that the impacts could worsen as creeks rise further or more rain arrives," The Weather Channel reported on Wednesday.

Tuesday's flooding affected the water treatment plant in St. Johnsbury, but town officials said, "Town staff are working to repair the damage and get the plant back up and running. We ask residents to conserve water when possible."

The town also reported Wednesday morning that multiple roads in the area remain damaged and closed.
