UPDATE: Coroner IDs man who died in 3-vehicle crash on Route 45

UPDATE at 3:08 p.m.

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Coroner has released the identity of the man killed in a three-vehicle accident in Urbana early Saturday morning.

According to Coroner Stephen E. Thuney, the man was identified as Justin L. Martinez, 25 of Byron.

Preliminary information indicated Martinez was driving northbound in Urbana on North Cunningham Avenue near Triumph Drive when another driver going the wrong way collided head-on with Martinez’s vehicle.

Martinez was taken to the Carle Foundation Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 1:57 a.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The Illinois State Police and Champaign County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate.


UPDATE at 1 p.m.

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — New details shared by State Police revealed one person is dead after a three-vehicle accident on Route 45 early Saturday morning in Urbana.

State Police say the accident happened just before 1 a.m. at Oaks Road in Urbana. The first vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lane when it struck the second vehicle head-on. This caused a third vehicle to hit the second vehicle.

The drivers of both the first and second vehicles were taken to a local hospital with injuries, where the driver of the second vehicle was later pronounced dead.

The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were not hurt.

One dead in Edgar Co. crash

The accident caused Route 45 northbound to be shut down before it was eventually reopened at 7:30 a.m. Police say no further information is available at this time.

The accident happened at Oaks Road. As a result, northbound traffic had to be detoured to Route 45 southbound. Police urged drivers to be extra cautious and encouraged anyone traveling through the area to take alternate routes.

Around 7:30 a.m., State Police announced the roadway had been reopened. There is no further information available at this time. WCIA will provide updates as we learn more.
