State police warn of lottery scam in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — PSP Dunmore wants the public to be aware of a scam/theft occurring in the Commonwealth.

According to PSP Dunmore, a letter was mailed to the victim, who lives in Scranton, indicating he was a second-prize winner in the USA Mega for a prize of $2,500,000.00.

The suspect in the letter goes by Allen Johnson. Johnson advised the victim, that Regions Capital Financial Services in Chicago, IL would handle the processing of his winnings and payment, according to state police.

A $4,500 check was enclosed with the letter from the “financial institution” and issued to the victim to help pay a $2,450.00 processing fee.

Police say the suspect told the victim to contact him to activate the check before cashing it.

PSP Dunmore warns the public to refrain from sending money to unverified businesses or people and not disclose personal information to anyone over the phone.
