Storms that canceled Lubbock fireworks also brought colorful double rainbow

Dark storm clouds that put a damper on Lubbock's 4th on Broadway evening concert and fireworks show Thursday came with the silver lining of much-needed rain.

They also had a rainbow lining, bringing a splash of color to an Independence Day evening sky that would go without a city-sanctioned fireworks display.

A vivid double-rainbow was observed by many across Lubbock as the potent line of storms moved eastward out of the city shortly before 9 p.m.

For its part, the National Weather Service in Lubbock issued a very special statement about the visual display, confirming in a social media post that its towercam off South Loop 289 showed a "beautiful and vibrant double rainbow as storms begin to track out of the city of Lubbock!"

The West Texas Mesonet site in southeast Lubbock recorded 1.67 inches of rain, with 0.95 of an inch near Lubbock Christian University and 1.18 inches near Slaton. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport only recorded 0.09 of an inch Thursday evening.
