Stoughton High School student shot and killed, another student injured in Boston

BOSTON — A Stoughton High School senior was fatally shot and another classmate was wounded in the same shooting incident in Mattapan on Friday afternoon, officials said.

Stoughton Public Schools announced Saturday morning in a Facebook post that Christian Cousins, a member of the Class of 2025, was shot and killed while in Mattapan with another Stoughton High student on Friday.

"The second student was also shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries," the school district said in its statement. "For the time being, the second student's identity is not being released."

The school district said it's never easy to deal with the loss of a student, but particularly under such circumstances.

"Our thoughts are with Christian's family, friends, and teachers, as well as the whole Stoughton High community," the statement says. "We are also keeping the other SHS student and their family and friends in our thoughts."

Officers assigned to District B-3 in Mattapan responded to the area of Gladeside Avenue and Donwood Terrace about 12:23 p.m. Friday for a report of a person shot.

"Upon arrival, officers located two victims inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds," Boston police said in a written statement. "Both victims were transported to local hospitals, one with non-life threatening injuries, the male victim with life threatening injuries. The male victim has since been pronounced deceased."

Video from Enterprise news partner WCVB's Sky5 helicopter showed crime scene markers around a home and a vehicle that appeared to have crashed through a fence.

Police said that the preliminary investigation did not suggest that the shooting was a random attack.

"The Boston Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident," police said. "Anyone with information is strongly urged to contact the Boston Police Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470."

Stoughton Public Schools officials said Saturday that the Stoughton High School Crisis Team would be meeting and would soon provide additional information regarding the supports available for students.

A total of seven people were struck by gunfire from Thursday night through Friday in Boston, WCVB reported. Two of those victims were killed, including Cousins.
