Suspect arrested in Daleville drive-thru murder case pleads for bail

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) – A Dale County man accused of shooting and killing his wife in the drive-thru line of a McDonalds is asking a judge to set a bond in his case, maintaining his innocence and insisting he was home the entire time.

Ricky McCray is charged with murder, accused of shooting his wife Stephanie three times, which later killed her. Police say the McCray’s were arguing in the drive-thru line of the McDonald’s in Daleville, an argument that could be heard through the intercom.

When they got to the pickup window, police say Stephanie asked the worker to call 911 because the man in the passenger seat had a gun.

The worker at the window says they saw the guy holding the gun, closed the drive-thru window, and ran away- before hearing the three gunshots that took Stephanie’s life.

An investigator on the stand on Tuesday during McCray’s hearing says that McCray didn’t become a suspect until 2-3 days after the shooting, and he was even at the hospital checking on Stephanie when she was pronounced dead.

Ricky says he was at his home in Ozark most of the day and never committed the crime.

Police say they have three workers at the restaurant who heard the gunshots, surveillance of nearby businesses of the suspect running from the McDonald’s, video of Ricky’s car leaving the area minutes after the shooting, and video of his vehicle on a road in Newton that you’d drive to get from Daleville to his home in Ozark just minutes after the shooting.

No weapon was recovered, but shell casings were found and investigated.

Ricky is asking for a bond to be set in his case. He says he will show up to court, has no prior felonies, has lived in the same house for more than 14 years, and owns his own mechanic business.

However, the state says Ricky shouldn’t get a bond because he has had multiple misdemeanor charges. These charges range from menacing to prostitution in two different states.

The state also says Ricky is a threat to the community because the shooting occurred in a very public area.

In this case, the judge took Ricky’s request for a bond and the state’s request to deny bail under advisement and is expected to make a ruling in the coming days.
