KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old Kansas City man in connection to a shooting that left a 23-year-old woman dead.

The shooting was reported Wednesday, June 26, just after 12 p.m. in the area of E. Linwood Boulevard and Garfield Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene they located a woman inside the apartment building suffering from an apparent gunshot to the left side of her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene and identified as Chestina Gaskin.

Oliver initially stated that several men came into the apartment and shot the victim but later recanted his statement, court documents say.

Oliver states he and the victim came to the apartment to spend time together. At some point, the victim accused Oliver of being unfaithful, at which time they engaged in a verbal argument, according to court documents.

Court documents say Oliver states the victim picked up his firearm from a table. He stated he then “snatched it” from her and began backing away. He further stated as he was backing away from the victim, the firearm “went off” while he was holding it, striking the victim in the head.

A silver Ruger 9 mm handgun was later located in the bushes behind the apartment building.
