Suspect dead after being shot by Vancouver officers
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is dead after he was shot by Vancouver police officers early Monday morning, authorities said.
According to Vancouver police, shortly before 1 a.m., an officer was flagged down on Northeast Andresen Road where several people reported that a man had pointed a gun at them in the parking lot of a McDonald’s.
More officers came to the scene and they found the suspect a few blocks away. The suspect didn’t listen to police commands, authorities said, so one officer released his K9 on him, and that’s when the suspect pointed his gun at the officers.

Vancouver police said that four officers all fired on the suspect, hitting him. The K9 was also shot in the tail during the incident.
William Buschtschosik told KOIN 6 News he had been camping near the shooting and heard at least seven shots ring out.
“Pop pop pop, rapid fire,” he said. “Next thing I know, everyone’s over there hiding from the police, it was crazy as hell.”
Authorities said they attempted to provide medical aid to the suspect and eventually he was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. The police K9 underwent surgery on his tail.
“There were mass sirens going to that area. They could’ve handled the situation without them getting hurt,” Buschtschosik said.

Following the protocol, the four officers involved are all on critical incident leave. Anyone who witnessed the shooting incident is asked to contact police.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is leading an independent investigation into the shooting, though they and Vancouver police declined interview requests with KOIN 6 News. However, they did say body camera footage will eventually be released.
This marks the second man killed by Vancouver police in 2024 — and in less than 10 days. That is twice the number recorded in 2023.
Last Friday, Vancouver police released this dashcam video showing officer Brandon Riedel shoot and kill 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko, whose dog allegedly bit at least one person. He can be seen pointing a gun at the officer before tossing it on the ground.
One witness, Rose, told KOIN 6 News “there was no effort to de-escalate the situation from what I saw.”
VPD confirmed Reidel had been involved in two previous police shootings, including the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Joshua Wilson. The armed robbery suspect was killed outside Safeway in May of last year.
