Suspect killed after allegedly attacking deputy with pipe identified

(SAGUACHE COUNTY, Colo.) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has identified the suspect who was shot and killed after allegedly attacking a Saguache County deputy with a metal pipe on Thursday, July 25.

According to the CBI, 40-year-old Jonathan Aaron Wood was shot and killed around noon on Thursday, after the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said he was seen near the Baca Grande Subdivision by a deputy who knew Wood had active warrants. As the deputy tried to talk to Wood, Wood pulled a 4-foot metal pipe and began attacking the deputy, according to the CBI.

During the attack, the CBI said the deputy pulled out his gun and fired twice, hitting Wood. The deputy immediately began life-saving measures, but Wood was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was treated for minor injuries at the hospital before being released.

According to the CBI, at the time of the shooting, Wood was sought on a warrant for Felony Assault on a Peace Officer out of Saguache County and a misdemeanor warrant for Property Damage/Criminal Mischief out of Mineral County.

The CBI said the felony warrant was related to a series of events from Aug. 11, 2023, in which neighbors called law enforcement due to Wood acting “erratically and in a threatening manner” with a 4-foot stick. Neighbors at the time reported that Wood was insisting he could hear voices screaming for help from his neighbor’s shed, and then from inside his neighbor’s house after neighbors opened up the shed to show Wood there was no one inside.

When deputies later tried talking to Wood about the incident, he threatened the deputies with the wooden stick and allegedly punched a deputy in the head. Wood’s later failure to appear in court for the assault charge is what led to the warrant and his fatal confrontation with a deputy on July 25.

The CBI said it is assisting SCSO in the shooting investigation. The involved deputy activated his body-worn camera and the footage is being reviewed by investigators, the CBI said. The deputy is on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
