Suspects wanted in theft of ‘rare’ 1900s poster from CU Boulder auditorium

DENVER (KDVR) — The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department needs help identifying two people who are suspected of stealing a rare poster from the Macky Auditorium on campus.

On Friday, CUPD posted on X asking for tips from the community.

According to the department, the poster was a vintage, mid-1900s Macky Auditorium performance poster that was reportedly stolen in the early morning hours of July 24. It is unclear how the suspects gained access to the building.

Macky Auditorium was completed in 1922 and has been home to several performances over the past century.

The poster is specifically from a pianist’s performance during the 1950s, although CU did not have a photo to share. Staff members say the way it was ripped from the wall would have caused some damage.

“It’s completely under investigation right now. We are looking for those leads to see what would draw, other than the history of the building and these rare items,” CU Police  Sgt. Chris Sallie said.

“They have a huge desire to have this back at this point so they can add it back to the others they are in possession of currently and keep on their walls for part of the history of Macky Auditorium.”

Police need help identifying the two people they believe are connected to the theft. The first suspect is described as:

  • Male

  • Between 18-24 years old

  • Has medium-length brown hair

  • Has a short brown beard

  • Last seen wearing a dark gray t-shirt, black shorts, white shoes and a black and white backpack

The second suspect is described as:

  • Female

  • Between 18-24 years old

  • Has shoulder-length brown hair

  • Last seen wearing a white tank top, light gray sweatpants, black and white shows and has a tattoo of a heart with a sword running vertically on outside of left forearm

CU Boulder police do not believe the suspects are students at the university.

Anyone with information on the suspects or the alleged theft is asked to call CU Boulder police’s non-emergency number at 303-492-6666 and reference case number 2024-8153.
