Tampa police officer arrested on domestic violence charge

A Tampa police officer has been placed on administrative leave after he was arrested on a battery charge.

Cornelius Young was arrested while off duty at a home in the 700 block of Cortaro Drive in Sun City on Wednesday, according to a news release from Tampa Police Department.

Police said an argument between Young and a woman he knew “turned physical,” and that the woman sustained minor injuries.

”To say this is disappointing is an understatement,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in the news release. “Our thoughts are with the victim involved. We are committed to transparency with our internal investigation. The allegations don’t represent the mission of the Tampa Police Department.”

Young, who has been employed with the agency since November, was immediately “relieved of his duties,” police said.

“He will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into this incident,” the news release states.

Young’s booking information was not immediately available.
