Teen accused of assaulting, robbing elderly man in Barstow

A 17-year-old boy who already had a felony record is accused of assaulting and robbing an elderly man in Barstow this week, police said.

The young suspect was arrested early Thursday at an apartment complex in the 600 block of East Virginia Way, according to the Barstow Police Department. Two men were also taken into custody during the arrest and three guns were seized, including an AR-15-style pistol and an un-serialized 'ghost gun.'

The robbery took place about 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the 2800 block of Lenwood Road.

"The 74-year-old victim was assaulted and robbed of a large sum of cash and his cellular phone," police said in a written statement. He suffered minor injuries.

Detectives gathered video surveillance footage and other evidence that led them to identify a 17-year-old Barstow boy as a suspect in the crime, officials said. They obtained an arrest warrant.

Meanwhile, officers responded to a seemingly unrelated call just after 2 a.m. Thursday from a woman who reported a man had pointed a rifle at her at an apartment complex in the 600 block of East Virginia Way, according to the police department.

Officers identified an 18-year-old man as the person who allegedly brandished a gun and arrested him, the statement said. A nearby 19-year-old man was also found to be in possession of a loaded gun and arrested.

A search of a nearby apartment led officers to find the 17-year-old suspect they had been seeking in connection with Tuesday's robbery, officials said.

"Additionally, Officers located a loaded AR-15-style pistol and a 9mm 'ghost gun' in the apartment," the statement said. "The suspect vehicle used in the initial robbery was later located at a separate location within Barstow and processed for evidence."

The 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of robbery, elder abuse and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The 18-year-old suspect was booked on suspicion of brandishing a firearm, possession of an assault weapon and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The 19-year-old suspect was accused of carrying a concealed firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
