Teen allegedly shoots 8-year-old sister in head

Oct. 30—A 17-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly shooting his sister in the head at a home in Clayton on Tuesday morning.

New Mexico State Police said the girl is in critical condition.

Her brother, Gio Blan, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

Officer Wilson Silver, a State Police spokesman, said Blan was booked into the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center.

Silver said around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Clayton Police Department responded to a call of an 8-year-old girl being shot inside a home in the 300 block of Magnolia Street, near U.S. 87.

He said the girl was taken to a local hospital, then flown to a Texas hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Silver said investigators learned Blan was getting ready for school with his siblings when he pointed what he thought was an unloaded handgun at his sister and pulled the trigger.

He said the girl was shot in the head and siblings tried to treat the injury before calling 911.

Silver said after the incident, Blan disassembled the firearm and threw it in a nearby dumpster, where it was found by police. He said the weapon did not belong to anyone in the home.

"This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau," Silver said.
