Teen allegedly shot security guard outside Coronado mall

Jul. 26—A 17-year-old boy is accused of shooting a security guard in the leg during a confrontation at Coronado Center on Friday afternoon in Northeast Albuquerque.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said Nathaniel Martinez was captured by officers "during a foot chase" and had thrown a gun under a vehicle nearby.

He said nobody else was injured.

Gallegos said Martinez was booked into the Bernalillo County juvenile detention center on several felonies, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting at an occupied building and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gallegos said around 1 p.m. Martinez was found sleeping inside Fuddruckers restaurant and was told to leave. He said, once outside, there was an "argument or confrontation" between Martinez and security.

Gallegos said Martinez was walking toward the parking lot when he fired three bullets at the guard, who was hit in the calf. He said a couple bullets hit the window and wall of the restaurant.

Gallegos said Martinez ran across Louisiana Boulevard before being arrested by arriving officers.

The incident marked the third time shots had been fired in or around the Uptown-area mall in the past year.

Both of the other instances involved teens.
