Terminated Kokomo Police Department officer facing criminal charges

A former Kokomo Police Department officer is facing numerous criminal charges after an investigation by the Indiana State Police led to his arrest.

A KPD media release Monday afternoon did not indicate what Sinmi Asomuyide is being accused of, though Tipton County Sheriff's Office officials stated Asomuyide is being held at their jail facility on charges related to sexual misconduct with a minor.

Asomuyide was a probationary officer with KPD at the time of his termination, and local officials say his termination is linked to an investigation that began earlier this month.

That's when KPD Chief Doug Stout was contacted by another law enforcement agency in reference to a criminal allegation involving Asomuyide, per the release.

KPD then reported the allegation to the Indiana State Police for further investigation, the release noted.

In addition to the ISP investigation, Stout and the department's Professional Standards Unit also launched an internal investigation into the accusations against Asomuyide.

According to the release, that internal investigation revealed Asomuyide had committed multiple policy violations — though officials did not indicate what those were — and he was reportedly terminated from the department on those violations.

This week, per the release, ISP also arrested Asomuyide for criminal behavior resulting from their own investigation.

Formal criminal charges have not been officially filed in the case against Asomuyide.

However, ISP Public Information Officer and Sgt. Steven Glass told the Tribune on Monday afternoon the charges are believed to range between level 4 and level 6 felonies.

Glass also stated ISP is planning on releasing additional information in their own media release Tuesday.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact KPD at 765-456-7017.
