Texas couple used warm tortilla to save baby bird, now named 'Taquito'

While at a backyard barbecue in the Panhandle, a Texas family found a tiny baby bird on the ground without its parents nearby. Concerned about the baby feeling cold, the couple did just what any normal Texan would do: wrapped it in a warm tortilla.

Admittedly, the rescue was taken aback when the woman detailed the scenario over the phone while seeking rescue.

"Only in Texas and maybe Mexico ... Rehabber Christy managed the call and inquired if they had already placed it in a box, to which they responded 'we wrapped him in a warm tortilla,'" the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo wrote in a Facebook post. "There was a significant silence on Christy’s side. Following this and a little concerned, she quickly ended the call and arranged for a transporter.

"Undoubtedly, it was an inventive method to keep the baby warm, and surprisingly, it was effective. Wildlife rescue is always filled with lively and unexpected moments," the rehab added.

The social media post quickly gained traction with even the North Texas Wildlife Center in Dallas-Fort Worth jokingly chiming in that they would "add tortillas to wish list."

How is the baby bird now?

The small Mississippi Kite, now fittingly named "Taquito," has adapted well since she went viral, according to the rescue, who will care for her over the next two months.

"She is maintaining a healthy appetite and has become quite popular online," according to a Facebook post.
