BOYNTON BEACH — A 44-year-old man who was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision that killed two people in the car he was driving died Friday of his injuries, police said.

Alejandro D. Rodriguez of suburban West Palm Beach died just before 5 p.m. Friday while in the care of Delray Medical Center Hospice, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

Rodriguez was driving a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Military Trail in Boynton Beach when it collided north of Miner Road with a speeding 2020 Lexus SUV driven by a 54-year-old Lake Worth Beach woman, deputies said.

The Lexus entered a sweeping left-hand curve and closed the distance between the two cars before it “violently collided” with the Volkswagen, the sheriff's office said. The impact caused the Lexus to overturn and come to a stop on the grass and dirt swale facing southwest.

The Lexus driver, whom police said was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, sustained minor injuries.

Rodriguez’s Jetta continued to travel in the outside lane on Military Trail before stopping on the edge of the road. Paramedics declared passenger Grechy Almaguer-Perez, 43, of suburban West Palm Beach, and a 10-year-old boy dead at the scene.

A fourth passenger, a 2-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Delray Medical Center. Rodriguez also was taken to the hospital for emergency care.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Lexus, deputies said.
