‘Thousands of victims’: Man pleads guilty in scheme to steal millions

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)– A Canadian man pleaded guilty in federal court in Las Vegas in connection with a scheme to steal millions of dollars from thousands of victims, according to The United States Department of Justice release.

On Monday, July 29, Poupak Jannissar, 52, who is from Quebec, Canada, pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering. Jannissar orchestrated a scheme that defrauded thousands of victims across the United States in an attempt to steal millions of dollars, according to the news release.

“Mr. Jannisar and his co-conspirators used sham companies to steal from unknowing victims by accessing their bank accounts using personal identifiable information from illegally obtained lists,” Eric Shen, inspector in charge of USPIS-CI, said.

Documents show that Jannissar ran a network of fake companies with names like Computer Run, EBooks, Joreeb, Our Online Backup, and much more.

Officials said these fraudulent websites tricked users into entering their banking information by promising various services. Instead of providing the services, Jannissar and his co-conspirators used their banking information and made additional unauthorized withdrawals which were then transferred to accounts in Canada.

Jannisar was arrested on Jan. 22, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, following a criminal complaint and arrest warrant issued in Nevada. Months later he admitted to his role in the fraudulent scheme and pleaded guilty, according to documents.

Jannissar faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each charge. Jannissar’s sentencing will be determined by a federal district judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.
