Three more people shot near Monte's Park in New Bedford, bringing total to nine

NEW BEDFORD — Three more people were shot in the Monte's Park area Sunday night, a week after six people were shot in that area early last Monday morning.

All nine victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not said whether the shootings are related.

Police said they were called Sunday night at around 9 p.m. on a report of a shooting at Monte's Park.

When they arrived, police said they learned that three adult men had sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment.

Police said detectives were called to the scene, and the investigation is active at this time.

Mayor Jon Mitchell issued the following statement Monday:

“There is no place in our city for these brazen acts of violence, and those responsible will be held accountable. The New Bedford Police Department is working around the clock on this investigation and is beefing up patrols throughout the neighborhood.”

Last Monday morning's shooting

In last Monday morning's shooting, police said they responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the Russell Street and Acushnet Avenue area near Monte’s Playground at around 1 a.m. where they found three adult victims with non-life-threatening wounds who were transported to the hospital.

Police said they learned an additional three adult victims had arrived at the hospital via private auto.
